Villa Mauri

The exquisite taste of Italy
by Farah HA

Food lovers can now indulge and savour in the delectable taste of Italian cuisine at the new Italian eatery, Villa Mauri.

The restaurant specialises in rich southern Italian flavours, spearheaded by Chef Maurizio Intrigila, hailing from Reggio Calabria, Italy, who acquired his "Diploma Di Cucina (kitchen)" from his homeland.

"Villa Mauri aims to provide quality and value for money dishes. We intend to uphold our motto of being 'Simply the best' in our field of work," said Chef Intrigila while explicating the ideas and concepts behind his restaurant during an interview with the Weekend.

"My family and I have been in Brunei for 12 years and although I travelled to other countries, my heart will always remain in Brunei, which I consider to be my second home and am well familiar with the market here."

This prompted him to set up his own local Italian restaurant with the vision of promoting only healthy authentic Italian food using a "low-fat" cooking method. The menu offers a wide selection of Italian dishes, Asian cuisine as well as desserts that will leave your taste buds demanding for more.

Healthy conscious individuals can relish in the fact that no butter or cream is used in any of the dishes offered. The chef also assured that all ingredients used are 100 per cent halal.

Customers can dine-in at the eatery to feel the delicious and mouth-watering cuisine from 10am to 2pm and 5pm to 10pm.

Bulimic: Ok so that came out a few weeks ago in the Weekend Bulletin. I've been to Villa Mauri before it came out though and I must say I liked the place and more importantly the food too. Now I haven't been to Italy, let alone taste authentic Italian dishes, so I can't really give an expert comparison, for all I know I might not even like it, but I find the dishes at Villa Mauri to my liking. I have only had the lamb shank (pic below) so far and I think it's the best one I've tasted served in any restaurant here.

The talk amongst my friends though is the Tiramisu. It's the type that makes you go speechless. One described it as gastronomically orgasmic! Then there is the Fantasia di Maria, another chocolate based dessert that you should have to complete your meal. The prices are quite reasonable and they also a set lunch menu of $11 which includes a soup or salad for starters and pasta or pizza for the main course. For dinner there is a $22 and $25 set meal too.

During the coming month of Ramadhan, Chef Intrigila said they will be having an all-you-can-eat promotion, so that is one to look out for!

Disappointment, with a capital D.

there is no ambience to the place and calling themselves a 'villa' hmm...

service was bad, esp the in your face captain and the few waitress have no idea what they were doing? or maybe the tv was in their eye line, they cant see us? or the music was so distracting, they cant hear us calling them. I dunno which is worse?

after hearing all the praises and raves from bloggers, decided to try out the 'villa'

got to say, wat's the point in making reservation beforehand. I politely asked if we can change our seats as it's right by the door as the place is still empty. Only to be told its fully booked, plus all the tables are table of 4. fine!

we sat where we were allocated.

Only, in come a family of 6 without reservation and wat they did? JOINED the table next to us up to form a bigger table. Wat the ----. How i know? COS we were sat right by the door thus hear everything and see everyone in and out!

some food was better than others, i give MV that. mine was so-so.

in my opinion, it was overrated by all the local bloggers. come'on.

hi all,

bloggers pun mau cari makan. so of course. they do what they need to do.

we are vulnerable sometimes. if only they are solely independent, I guess they would have been more independent.

anyway... i got the feeling the menu is mediocre?(spelling).

This chef was responsible for the success of Fatini's cafe.

I hopw thew chef can come up with more exicitng dish. remain classic but inviting.

I'll give it another 4- 6 months.

food lover.

Ya, i totally agreed with "family of 5"... The captain is not well trained... when we were talking to him, he was looking at someone else and doesnt pay attention to us at all, so we have to pause and repeat our orders again.... There is no need to mention about the rest of the service staffs......

And what make things worst... the Boss himself was not very polite to his customer as well... all of them needs improvement!!!!!
The food was so so only... I mean from the ratings given by the rest it was really overrated....!!!!! We ordered 3 kind of pasta dishes, one with seafood but the prawns was not fresh... the rest i will just give 50/100....The highly recommended Lamb Shank was not as good too... The tuna steak was extremely "fishy" and i can still remember the fishy taste after 2 weeks from then. The tiramisu was so creamy (as in too much cream and too little cheese used). The chocolate pudding was ok... I can get better one in another cafe in Gadong.

The above are just my opinion and my dining experience with the restaurant. No offends at all!!!!!

Ops I must admit reading the last 2 anonymous comment yes even the Italian one I translated to the Google web page it made me interested to go and check it my self this Villa Mauri....
Well the Chef or Mouri what ever it was a wonderful man and the food that it served me and my wife was second to none and of course I am talking about Italian Food.
As for the cleanliness of the restaurant mean check the toilet there are more flowers there then a flower shop as for the comment made about the "COCkroach in it..." I doubt it very much and in addition I find you to be very rude I think maybe you jealous of him or maybe you don't like him.
I recommend this place to all my friend and they have been very positive about the food the only negative comment I hear it was that is a bit pricey.
Well done Mr Mouri I hope all the best for you and your staff you make us very happy.

Have checked out this review before I went out for dinner with my friends who suggested Villa Mauri for a try. On first impression, there was lack of service for a restaurant known to be serving 'up-class' menu. The lamb promotion was on but the lamb shank was a little tough. The ravioli was a pretty pathetic small serving for normal eating guys. We would have gone back for the pizza and the appetizers but the price could be a deciding factor as it is not the place for frequent dining - pricey that is. They have lots of conditions for their 'promotions' and 'discounts'including less discount for credit card use, discount only if everyone purchase a beverage etc. Overall, just a little too pricey for the servings. Just my two cents of honest opinion for the benefit of other new diners.

Dear Dan
Thank you so much for the valuable comment that you have made they can only help us to improve our overall immage.
Spoken to Chef Michele who is running that outlet and will take immiedate action.
For the discount unfortunally given 50% off we need to have condition with it and bank and other institute do not care abput our discounted price they still charge the % for each transaction.
Drinks can be a Pepsi or even a water bottle I mean we are talking about the B$ 2.20 per drink per person.
Anyhow feel free to drop us a line or 2 this are the following email
chefmauri@villamauri.com
chefmichele@villamauri.com
Drop in Gadong we have an arrey of activities going on for example on the first floor 2 or 3 course meal from B$ 22 (For Member Card Holder B$ 10 for LIFE) and NO you dont after get a drink I mean is not in the condition I personally have been there now for 2 months and just launched a new menu.
Meanwhile thatnks for your honest opinion and look forward to cook for you one of this day...

- I only went to WyWy once and I think they are unreasonably over priced for a normal restaurant. Service sucked like hell. A little smile would have been better.
-I think they hv been victimised by someone who has some grudge against them!
-To close the matter for once and for all, we need another independent lab test to reconfirm.
