Dining Experience

Got this via email....

I don't usually go to Mamih as I think that their food is too oily and drink is too sweet. However on this day, I felt like eating their nasi lemak bungkus so my friend and I dropped by their Kuilap branch. Each of us ordered a nasi lemak ayam bungkus.

After a few bite, to our horror, we found a big, complete, handsome little dead housefly in 1 of the nasi lemak bungkus. What the heck? Is this today's special or what? Feeling disgusted, we called the waitress and showed it to them. They took a look at the nasi, spotted the housefly, looked at us and said in Malay "So you wanna change a new one or cancel it?" WTH! Not even an apology at all!

What should I say? "Erm, iI would like to change a new one, with Cockroaches ok?" If this is in overseas, they would have sincerely apologise, get you a new order and the meal would be free of charge. But in Brunei, in this restaurant, they would only ask you whether you wanna change a new one or cancel it. Why this atitude? The only reason I can think of is maybe this kind of incident always happen there, so common that they don't even have to say sorry anymore, it's like you come to Mamih, you can expect housefly in your nasi.

I shared this story and show the pics to my friends, they told me they know this restaurant is unhygienic, which is why they seldom go there. I guess that would be the last time I stepped into this restaurant. This unhygienic condition and a titude of their staff is truly not acceptable. If you read this, please share this to your friends and think again if you are planning to dine in there. Perhaps, which ever government department that is concern about health and hygiene should have an inspection on them. Below are the pics i took with my camera phone for proof.

: Such an unfortunate incident. I'm sure many of us has experienced it before, things like a strand of hair on your food or in your drink. And normally they would just get you a new one and if you're lucky they would apologizedini to you and won't charge the item on your bill.

Thanks for Noname for sharing his piece. It may not be a review but we do welcome such entry as dining experience is in someway a review too. Like I've said below, be it good or bad, we welcome everyone to share with us their story. Email it to whatiate2day@gmail.com.

Well it could've happen at any other restaurant really but I myself am very sceptical with the cleanliness there and plus I think their service is any better too.

bad service is bad service wherever you are. it's sad that bad service is so rampant here in Brunei. Mamih is notorious for 'extra flavour' in your food.

Typical diners will always be typical. Im bruneian myself, but r we prepare to pay for quality food with quality ingredients? or makan asal kanyang mindset? u can tell. this things are immuned among diners. so its natural, unless they are double standard. Would you buy my nasi lemak for $10?? absolutely no rite, but if we were in some "oversea hotel" then we would even more. TYPICAl kan. so start paying for quality food.

Three reasons:

1. The waitress thought you put the fly there so you can get free food (you must admit that someone will do that, I know we won't but someone will.)

2. They get used to it already (like what you mentioned).

3. They think they're just working there, no big deal. Services are bad in Brunei because there's no tipping (give tips), and there's quite a lot of rude people around.

I went to Mamih 2 days ago, my second visit in my eternal life, and guess no 3rd time anymore. =)

Salamualaikum. My friend and i chilled in Mamih so many times already i think since so many years ago, never had such experianced, no problem man , no flies no hair inside on the food served there. Maybe its just ure unlucky day. Why not complaint to the supervisor or to the manager , straight forward to them rather than writing it on the internet which is not professional, actually there are so many cafes in Gadong extremely unhygenic thier plates are being washed outside their restraurant and dogs came around, they might licked on the plate...yuck!!!theres also some cafe served Alcohol drinks which is forbidden in Brunei especially for Muslims.nameless cafe lah because i dont want to ruined people's business unlike you man. support urang melayu Brunei lah business nda kan harap kan Governement only. If ure Urang Melayu dont kill urang Melayu lah. If ure chinese please help urang Melayu jua ..k Peace

Waalaikumsalam.

I think we have the right to publish the matter here, professional or not, that would be a matter of opinion. But I think most complains falls on deaf ears really, no matter if its a Malay, Chinese or Indian restaurant. In a proper restaurant, the waitress would've probably alerted her supervisor if a customer complains instead of giving a customer new meal. That is what is lacking too, proper restaurant management. And lets say you do get to complain the Manager, I guess the outcome would still be the same. You probably might be the center of a joke though, "sekadar nasi bungkus seringgit jua ganya".

Yes we are Melayu but we're not out trying to kill Melayu business here, c'mon please be realistic. This blog serves as a wake-up call to them food outlet operators to have a proper customer service other than just good food. Servers with attitude of malas ku ingau is what we dont need, especially with Visit Brunei 2008 coming.

Like our intro said, we invite feedbacks that are brutally honest. Good or bad we want everyone to have their say. Those places with illegal activities, if you really know them, and if you really wanna be a good citizen, then you should report it to the proper authorities for proper action.

LOL...This is just insulting my thinking processor!!!...Why would someone wanted to sell fly in thier meals?as ingredient or new flavour??be logical, put some sense in your head. It must be an accident LOL..Does it happen to every one? every day?? I guess not..

I think the contributor knows that they didn't put the fly on purpose, it was rather how the waitress handle the issue. I think you missed this bit;

"Feeling disgusted, we called the waitress and showed it to them. They took a look at the nasi, spotted the housefly, looked at us and said in Malay "So you wanna change a new one or cancel it?" WTH! Not even an apology at all!"

- I only went to WyWy once and I think they are unreasonably over priced for a normal restaurant. Service sucked like hell. A little smile would have been better.
-I think they hv been victimised by someone who has some grudge against them!
-To close the matter for once and for all, we need another independent lab test to reconfirm.
